Al Capone Canada hideout |
Capone replied "I dont even know what street Canada is on"
Gota love that sarcastic, "you wont fool me copper" kinda humor.
This unique piece of history was almost lost to the trees when I arrived as it seems no one is taking care of it, or interested in preserving part of Canada's controversial past. When you first walk up the evidence of vandalism is everywhere. The place has been treated like a dump and is embarrassing to know my fellow Canadians are mostly to blame. Why someone needs to deface history to prove they were there when all there doing is adding to the breakdown and ruin of said object is beyond me/idiotic. The very thing they felt so interested in, they then chose to add to its destruction. Makes absolutely no sense to me. All this tagging/marking/vandalism does is make the actual land owner
( yes, this is private property ) want to enforce his rights so no one can come here. So, all that people are really doing by tagging is wrecking it for the rest of us, and possibly your future children.
Dont be a jerk, let others enjoy the fun too.
As the saying goes, "take a picture, it'll last longer".
Rant done.

If you go, be careful, the floor was caving in all over and the fact that its all boarded up now means there is no light, making the holes even more dangerous ( bring a flash light, my Iphones light didn't work all that well from my experience ). There is also NO cell service, so if something happens to you, your on your own. If you can, dont go alone.

I decided to add some noise in the photo to give it that old time scary movie vibe something like a blair witch project effect. I had shot this on my Iphone so noise/graininess wasnt a problem, *chuckles to himself* but with the right tweaking on PS it gives the feel like its right off a horror movie role.
Looks to be the original fireplace. How this place didnt go up in flames already I dont know; It just goes from fireplace to wood floor, maybe Im just to used to things being to code. lol.

Kitchen area. The one thing I noticed was there are lots of doors at this place compared to usual houses.

4th bedroom. Ive heard people try and say this was a torture room but I have my doubts. There are wires hooked up to the wall and a mount but the cables could only hold something mildly heavy, Definitely not a human. The first thing that came to mind was old photos Ive seen of when counterfeiters dried there money on similar wire racks. I could just be jumping to that idea because of the criminal nature of Capone tho. It does also look like how they deal with old negative photos, but I have a hard time believing Capone was into photography that much.

If the owner by fluke of a chance see's this, I would gladly come clean up from time to time for the sake of preserving history and alleviate this herculean task off your shoulders. A bit of a thank you for letting me take these pics.
I think a Pembroke Lawyer now owns the place.
ReplyDeleteI hope he/she owned it after I went in. haha
Deletelast time I was there is was pretty run down and yes hard to see from the road till you pass by then have to turn around as for the tree thinking his money is hid close by as in the tree lol
ReplyDeleteYou did the pass by, turn around too? haha. Great! Now all I'll be doing is wondering what treasure is in that tree!. lol
DeleteI'm pretty sure that room was converted into a drying room (herbs...wink wink) long after Capone was done with the place and it is a hardware store in Pembroke that owns it. From my time exploring the place most that is there now is from vandals or newer criminals
ReplyDeleteMakes sense. Ah well, its fun to dream about this mythical story.
DeleteGrrrreat! Once this hits mainstream media it will be cordoned off with no access. Whos the dumdum.
ReplyDeleteWhile I understand where you're coming from, attention isn't necessarily bad, as this very well could be turned into a business for some local entrepreneur, who not only creates a job but is also preserving an alluring/ taboo/ strange bit of history. Let us not forget, this building is already boarded up, falling apart, floors caving in and privet property. What access people wish to save is gone or holding on by a thread. Sometimes you just gotta roll the dice.
DeleteLove to know more about this place and that darn trees lol.
ReplyDeleteThe excitement of going here and having to get access through a missing windo or part of the boarding is amazing, to go in and look at all the names scratched in the logs from people that have visited is just as impressive to read! The part I do hate is the hateful vandelism with purposely breaking things, leaving your garbage and beer bottles laying around is not want I wanted to see and ruins the experience:(
'The part I do hate is the hateful vandalism' You and me both!
DeleteBut I did enjoy the experience, and it was kinda neat seeing all the names.
to bad it was vandalized I did a drive by and had to turn around as I missed the driveway..lol and as for the tree thinking somewhere close by is an escape hatch....but it is a very interesting place to visit
ReplyDeleteIt sure is!
DeleteI remember sitting in August Quade’s livingroom in Quadeville as he related the story of him going to Chicago to collect on his bill for the lumber. The address he had was a Deli, and there he found out who Mr Hatch was, and who owned the property. He returned home empty handed.
ReplyDeleteWe visited the building, and he showed us the layout. Most interesting were the closets, with no flooring - to accommodate the ladders from upstairs to down.
I made a geocache to commemorate the location (but the cache is NOT on the property).

Does anybody know if this is still open to explore? Me and my fiancee are from Bancroft and would love to see/photograph this place!
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't you go down and see if there's actually tunnels are they closed off
